SaaS means Software as a Service: you log in through a browser or app, pay per user or per month, and the vendor handles hosting and upgrades. It is the usual shape of off-the-shelf products. The trade-off is speed to start versus control — your data lives in their model, and leaving means an export project.
SaaS is the right default for commodity work. It is a poor default when the product’s model cannot express how you bill, stock or job. That is the build versus buy line.
A custom system can still be delivered “as a service” — hosted, subscribed, maintained — without being a multi-tenant product sold to the world. Do not confuse the delivery model with the ownership model.
